Chapter 7

Derek found himself pacing from the kitchen to the living room and back again, for the second time that week, waiting for Gina to call. He worried she wouldn’t after their earlier conversation, and then he wondered what he should do if she didn’t. Put more pressure on her and risk pushing too hard, or back off and possibly allow her to run away because he wasn’t pushing hard enough?

Damn, this was difficult. For some reason he had a crazy idea that once he finally coaxed her into taking down the wall she had between them and they started dating it would all be smooth sailing. He would be in charge, she would listen…Ha! That was one of the stupidest thoughts he’d ever had. Not even a day in and he felt like he was walking through a minefield with a skittish cat in his arms. One wrong move, by either of them, and they’d both be blown to bits.

Would she call? Did he come on too strong in expecting to see her today? He should have hidden his disappointment at finding out about her busy schedule better, but he never imagined she’d have standing plans five nights a week. He foolishly assumed that when he didn’t see her she was probably at home, which in hindsight was the second dumbest assumption he’d ever made. She wasn’t some helpless girl pining away for companionship. No, she was a busy career woman who had a life of her own, and he should be happy about that. And he really was. Past girlfriends had become clingy or expected too much of his time, which made him drop them faster than a pan of hot enchiladas, but they were also money–grubbing bitches only after his wealth. He’d projected his past experiences onto Gina, turning her into the perfect woman in his mind. Smart, strong and independent but also completely available to be at his beck and call. He grinned a twisted little smile at his own ridiculousness. He had no clue how he’d conceived of that fucking bit of idiotic logic, except that he’d been pursuing her for months and not getting anywhere so he must have concocted a fantasy Gina without even realizing it.

The phone rang, stopping the hamster wheel his brain was riding mid–spin. Derek took a deep breath, willing himself not to sound relieved, or desperate, and answered, “ Hello?”

“Hey Derek, it’s Gina.”

“Hey,” he replied, like he didn’t have a pic of her programmed into his phone that popped up when she called. “How was yoga?”

“Good, kicked my ass like usual.”

Derek chuckled. “I guess that’s good if that’s what you go there for.” He wondered how long they were going to make small talk. They’d wasted enough time in bars doing nothing but chitchat. Now he wanted to get to know her.

Apparently she thought so too. “Listen, I think we should spend some time getting to know each other, like you said earlier.” Yes! Derek mentally fist pumped. “Since I’m pretty booked during the week I thought we could just talk at night before bed on those days.
